Norddeutscher Figuralchor

From our perspective [...] several lengthy and hugely demanding items won our admiration. The Norddeutscher Figuralchor [...] gave us two marvellous experiences, with Strauss's racy and unpublished Die Gottin in Putzzimmer (alluding to his wife's untidiness!) and Schonberg's Friede auf Friede (horrendously difficult, emerging as beautiful and deeply moving) plus, in their church concert, Bach's great motet Jesu meine Freude (often sung with instrumental support to prevent the pitch falling, but not by these seasoned virtuoso singers).

[...] the Norddeutscher Figuralchor, which has won many awards, convinces us with slender, pure voices and its amazing homogenity. It is above all the intimate pieces [...] which sound bewitchingly beautiful.

Straube insisted, underlined, calmed, and the choir found a suitable answer for his every gesture. The coloratura passages were illuminated to the very last semi-quaver.

As usual with them, balances and tonal variety are superb. Straube also draws a magnificently apt variety of timbres from his singers. Sometimes, the sound is richly vibrant, at others steely in its lack of vibrato. Little dynamic shifts are nearly constant, and quickly change to the needs of the texts. As you'd expect from him, Straube elicits strict standards of flawless intonation.

Not only does Straube's semi-professional choir know how to treat the unpredictability of the modulation in Reger's Motets Opus 110 [...] with style and elan, but also with incredible sensitivity. Although the choir allows itself no flaws in the interpretation of the musical text, the sound is never academically analytical, but is always interfused with tonal beauty and a breath of Weltschmerz.
Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung  |  April 1,1993

This ensemble reacts as an integrated whole, demonstrating the virtuosity of the voices; it has well-trained voices which do not get bogged down in the text [...] Jörg Straube did not chase his choir through a polyphonal thicket; every voice remained clear, the articulation being gained totally from the language and the expression [...] stylistically a completely authentic interpretation in total clarity, refined intonation, elegantly flowing, relaxed in the phrasing, meaningful where expression demanded it.
Volksblatt Würzburg  |  January 28, 1992

[...] textually understandable, expressive, full of contrast and sure in intonation [...]
Neue Musikzeitung  |  5/1989

[...] an elite ensemble [...] of great merit: floating voices with a light tonal top spin, steadiness in the women's parts, meticulous articulation.
